We signed up to ride “The Great Brisbane Bike Ride” on May 15th. Manny is doing the 70km and me the 40km ride. I was a bit concerned about riding over the Gateway Bridge, so we gave it a go last weekend just to reassure myself that I could do it. I zeroed my odometer at the very beginning of the bridge and to my surprise the ascent was a whopping 1.1 kilometre. The incline was gradual and surprisingly easy, so over we went after checking out the view from the top of the bridge. Good fun whizzing down the other side. On the south side of the river, we did a bit of a rekkie to see how far the Moreton Bay Cycleway (MBC) would take us but we soon encountered a busy road and turned back and headed back over the bridge back to the car. We’ve always planned to do a long ride on the MBC and spotted a fabulous parking spot under the bridge as a starting point thus avoiding paying the tolls for crossing the bridge & back. Rather spend the money on coffee.

It was a pleasant surprise that our old friends from B.C. (before children) were planning a 1650km walk across France this year. So they joined us for a walk up Mt Warning, them trialling their back packs with a full load. Photos provided by Russell who not only had a full back pack with front bags and managed to take some great photos. As our trip is still 6 months away we are focussed on trying out our new waterproof walking shoes and increasing our fitness. Russell & Kath leave in 6 weeks hence their interest in testing out their equipment. Mt Warning, for those who don’t know it, is a challenging uphill walk (9kms return) to the summit of a volcanic plug in the middle of the Scenic Rim caldera. The final part a rock climb using chains. All good fun and not difficult if you take it slowly and don’t do what I did last time and take a tumble about 20 minutes from the bottom and badly twist an ankle. |
