Severe storms and heavy rains were forecast for today so we walked closer to home in the Nerang State Forest. So far we've only walked in good weather but we wanted to be able to sceadaddle home if there was lightening. There was no sceadaddle anywhere. This morning the weather was unseasonably hot and humid, I wished I had more water with me. We got a bit lazy and brought water bottles instead of packing the bladders into the backpacks which meant I couldn't sip as we went but had to stop & help each other getting the bottle out of the pocket. That was the first mistake, another was not packing lunch. We walked 18kms with some fairly steep hills. This turned out to be a fairly challenging walk in the end. Probably borne out by the lack of photos taken. The predicted rain arrived gentle drizzle at first but got much heavier and we very excitedly had to use our umbrellas for the first time. They worked really well at keeping us reasonably dry and the packs too. I discovered that my water proof walking shoes aren't water proof. Other than this I'm very happy with them. I wonder if the water tracked down from above or they simply leaked. The lambs wool inserts are soaked and hanging out in the laundry to dry. Our longest training walk - 18kms - great day in all.

We didn’t walk in the National Park last weekend due to the big storm that passed through on the Saturday but did manage a walk from home to Burleigh Heads along the beach. Yesterday we did the 4 hour (12km) Daves Creek circuit again but this time in the reverse direction which is a more challenging walk because it has more uphills. This walk has such a wonderful diversity of vegetation from rainforest to heath lands and magnificent views. The air was really clear and from Surprise Rock we could see as far north as Moreton Island, which is directly east of Brisbane. We saw a couple of wallabies, a python that was virtually comatose with the cold and had a very friendly bird join us for lunch. We are doing all our training walks with fully laden, well almost, backpacks and using the equipment that we will use on the Camino in September/October.
